
Velizar Sadovski
Velizar Sadovski, born 1972, is Distinguished Research Fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Iranian Linguistics Group Leader of its Institute of Iranian Studies. Specialist in Indo-Iranian Philology, Comparative and Historical Indo-European Linguistics. Holder (since 2023) of the National Scientific Habilitation of Italy, Rank I: Professore Ordinario, in the field of Linguistica e Glottologia.
Austrian Habilitation (2010) as Dozent (Associate Professor) for Indo-European Studies. M.A. and PhD studies summa cum laude at the University of Vienna; teaching activity there since 2001. Employment at the Academy since 1998 and at its Institut für Iranistik since its foundation in 2003. From 2009 to 2011 Deputy Director of the Institute of Iranian Studies. In 2010 promotion to Senior Scientist, on 1.1.2022, after the 2021 reform, to Senior Research Associate, and since 2023 to Distinguished Research Fellow — the new top-rank research position at the Academy corresponding to the EU career level of Leading Researcher in the European Union’s Framework for Research Careers.
Main fields of research: Ancient Indo-Iranian languages and literatures (Avestan, Old Persian, Vedic Sanskrit); Indo-Iranian Linguistics, Poetics and Religious History; Comparative Indo-European Studies: word formation (derivation, composition); Greek, Latin, Byzantine and Slavic philology; syntax, stylistics and pragmatics of Indo-Iranian; Indo-European poetry and ritual.
