About
Velizar Sadovski, born in 1972, has been working at the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 1997 and at the Institute for Iranian Studies since its foundation in 2003. His main fields of research are Old Iranian Philology, Indo-Iranian Linguistics and Indo-European Studies. He finished his master and doctorate studies summa cum laude at the University of Vienna, at which has been teaching since 2001. From 01.01.2009 to 31.10.2011, he was Deputy Director of the Institute of Iranian Studies. Since May 2010, he is also Universitätsdozent (Assoc. Professor) for Indo-European Studies.
As Visiting Professor of Iranian Philology he has been teaching since 2005 at the Universities of Bologna, Rome I ("La Sapienza"), Naples ("L’Orientale"), and Viterbo (Università della Tuscia) and has given seminars on Vedic Sanskrit and Indo-European Linguistics at Universities of Munich (Germany) and Leiden (Netherlands). He has been giving lectures on Historical and Comparative Linguistics in Athens, Berlin, Bologna, Bolzano, Bonn, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Cracow, Delhi, Dushanbe, Erlangen/Nuremberg, Freiburg, Graz, Halle, Jena, Kraków, Kyoto, Leiden, London, Marburg, Milan, Munich, Naples, Oslo, Paris, Ravenna, Rome, San Marino, Salzburg, Sofia, Trapani, Verona, Viterbo, Vienna and many other international universities.
Velizar Sadovski is Editor of the publication series "Veröffentlichungen zur Iranistik” and "Iranische Onomastik” at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (together with Bert G. Fragner), of the series "Studien zur historisch-vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft" (together with Harald Bichlmeier; appearing in Hamburg) and "Indo-Iranica et Orientalia" at the University of Bologna (together with Antonio Panaino; appearing in Milano) and of the Lexicon of the Iranian Personal Names (together with Rüdiger Schmitt, Heiner Eichner and Bert G. Fragner). He is Board Member of the international Society of Indo-European Studies (Indogermanische Gesellschaft), auditor of the Board of the Societas Iranologica Europaea and Foreign Member of the Italian Institute for Africa and the East.
Sadovski's scientific interests are concentrated in the fields of Indo-Iranian languages and literatures - Avestan, Old Persian and Vedic, Indo-Iranian Poetics as well as, more generally, of the Comparative Indo-European linguistics - in particular, word formation (nominal derivation and composition), Greek, Byzantine and Slavonic philology as well as syntax and stylistics of Indo-Iranian poetry.
