About

I am a cultural historian and my main focus is Western Europe in the period 500-1000. I have to date worked on the seventh-century Italian monastic author, Jonas of Bobbio, and the monastic and secular networks in which he operated in Merovingian Gaul and Lombard Italy. I attended the Universities of Oxford, Oslo, and St Andrews, where I gained my doctorate in 2009 under the supervision of Professor Robert Bartlett. I am currently a visiting researcher at the Institut für Mittelalterforschung in the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. I am interested in monastic and secular networks, the construction of monastic identities and ideas of community, textual and source criticism, and Irish monastic exiles on the Continent in the early Middle Ages.
